Keeping a Diet Journal for Weight Loss

It's never easy to keep up with a Diet Journal tracking everything you eat on a daily basis, but keeping a Diet Journal is one of the best ways to keep yourself on track with your weight loss goals, and to keep yourself accountable. By keeping a journal of everything you eat, you will know exactly what you've consumed, and can use that to help fight the urge to eat more, and avoid eating unhealthy foods.

Do you know how many calories you have consumed today, and do you know how much of your calories come from proteins, carbohydrates, and dietary fats? Keeping a food journal will tell you all of that and more. Keeping track of the foods you consumed will let you know where your calories are coming from, and how balanced your diet is. More importantly, it will let you know if you've consumed too many calories, or if you consumed fewer calories to create a calorie deficit.

It's not necessary to keep a food journal indefinitely. If you want to know how much calories you are consuming and where your calories are coming from, simply keep a food journal for one or two weeks. This would be enough to give you a clear picture of what you've eaten.

It's quite simple to keep a food journal. Record all the foods that you eat - everything from breakfast cereal to what's in your sandwich for lunch, and what you had for supper, and don't forget to write down the snacks you had in between. Write down the amount of everything you ate with nutritional values. If you have some basic knowledge of Excel, you can do this easily and even setup formulas to automatically calculate your calorie intake, and customized it to how you like it. Or, you can use many of the online diet journals to help you keep track of your food intake.
